Laser Skin Treatments

Each type of laser can function in its own way in terms of how the wavelengths are delivered and the intensity of the treatment. However, laser skin treatment tends to involve a similar general process when it comes to the mechanism of action and how the skin responds to reveal satisfactory results. When the skin is treated with the laser, small areas of tissue and skin cells are broken down, and the natural healing process begins.

As the skin on the face heals and new skin cells are created, some of the surface-level flaws become much less apparent. Some lasers can also stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which can help minimize the appearance of certain issues like stretch marks and acne scars.

The ICON system is a preferred skin laser because it boasts multiple small laser heads that can be used. This allows us to adjust the wavelength of the laser to specifically target different problems. For example, IPL (intense pulsed light) laser heads target problems like age spots or dark scars, as well as remove unwanted facial hair.

We take extra steps to keep you comfortable throughout your treatment, and you can always let us know if you feel overwhelmed by the sensations. While every patient’s treatment session can be unique, take  a look at a few general steps to expect, including:

• You will be seated in a comfortable chair while your skin is thoroughly cleanses
• We apply a topical solution to your skin to encourage numbness
• You will rest for about 30 minutes while the numbing action takes effect
• We will use facial lasers to target the areas of the skin that need to be treated

Depending on your situation, the duration of treatment can be anywhere from just a few minutes to several. Most patients only feel a warm or tingling sensation as the laser’s wavelengths are moving through the skin.

Once your treatment session is complete, we may apply a soothing serum to your face to help cool the area and keep inflammation at a minimum. You will see some redness and irritation, and your skin may even feel warm to the touch or a little swollen. You may even notice that pigmented areas that were targeted look a bit darker than usual. These are normal reactions after laser treatment.

You will be free to return to your normal day immediately after treatment. However, you will likely be given instructions regarding what products to avoid using on the skin for two or three days after treatment. It is also a good idea to avoid excessive sun exposure while your skin is healing. Depending on the treatment, you may experience some peeling as the outer layers of the skin are exfoliated. You should see healthier, rejuvenated skin beneath after the peeling subsides.

After a few days, you should start to see some improvements in your skin’s tone and texture as the healing process gets underway. For treatments targeted at fine lines, it can take several months to see the full results due to waiting for the body to naturally produce more collagen.
