IV Therapy Q&A
Why do I need IV therapy?
When you’re admitted to the hospital or visit the emergency room for an illness, one of the first things your nurse does is place an intravenous (IV) line. This IV gives your medical team direct access to a vein so you can get essential fluids, electrolytes, vitamins and minerals, and medications. You may need IV therapy to:
- Get fluids and nutrients that you can’t get orally due to vomiting
- Receive antibiotics or pain medications
- Treat medical dehydration
The expert team of practitioners at MEDHERO Advanced Urgent Care and Wellness Center provides this same level of medical IV therapy in the comfort of an urgent care clinic. Their goal is to keep you under observation while administering your IV therapy treatment so you can prevent a hospital or ER visit.
What happens during IV therapy?
Your IV therapy session at MEDHERO Advanced Urgent Care and Wellness Center is personalized to you and your condition. After checking your vital signs and evaluating your symptoms, your physician determines which type of IV therapy you need.
Your practitioner places your IV line in a strong vein, like in your forearm or back of your hand. If you’re severely dehydrated, your veins likely aren’t as prominent and your IV line may need to be placed in an alternative location, such as the inside bend of your elbow.
Once your IV is in place, your physician attaches your IV therapy solution and the fluid is gradually absorbed into your body. Your practitioner also injects any essential medications directly into your IV line. All you have to do throughout this entire process is lie back and relax.
How long does IV therapy take?
It just depends on the speed of your drip, how ill you are, and which medications you need. In general, it takes anywhere from about 20-40 minutes to completely finish an IV fluid bag. If you’re on a slow drip, it could take longer. You may need more than one IV therapy treatment, meaning a second IV fluid bag, if you’re severely dehydrated.
The compassionate team at MEDHERO Advanced Urgent Care and Wellness Center monitors you regularly to ensure your symptoms improve. They want to help you become strong enough to go home to recover rather than going to the hospital.
The team at MEDHERO Advanced Urgent Care and Wellness Center welcomes walk-in visits for IV therapy sessions. You can also book an appointment online or over the phone.
